Top 7 Tips to Take Supplements Without Getting Taken

Walk down the supplement aisle at most health food stores, pharmacies and, increasingly, supermarkets, and it is almost impossible not to feel overwhelmed by the dozens – sometimes hundreds – of brands and combinations. Should you select a multivitamin/mineral combination or a dozen bottles of single-nutrient supplements or a multi plus a few additional singles? Should you buy natural supplements or synthetic? Regular or timed-release? A store brand or a national brand? Tablets or capsules? If so, how much more? Energy formula? Stress formula? Women’s formula or men’s? It is such a hassle, there are so many brands and so many combinations. The choices are confusing, and few consumers know much about what they are buying. As a result, they often spend much more than necessary for supplements that may not meet their needs. Fortunately, you can take supplements without getting taken. Here is what I can advise.

1. Look For An Expiration Date

An expiration date is no guarantee of freshness, but it suggests that the packager understands that vitamins have a finite shell life. Steer clear of supplements within six to nine months of their expiration dates. They have probably been in the bottle for several years and may be past their prime.

2. Keep Supplements Away From Children

This is especially true for iron, often taken to treat iron-deficiency anemia or iron loss from heavy menstrual flow. Although – iron and supplements in general – are safe for most adults at the optimal daily requirement, it takes only a few tablets of a high-potency iron supplement to kill a child. An estimated 5,000 children swallow toxic doses of iron supplements every year; a few die. In the typical case, an adult carelessly leaves iron supplements on a bathroom or kitchen counter. Don’t do this.

The Festive, Fit Family: Ten Ways to Combat Childhood Obesity by Getting the Whole Family Healthy?holiday Style

By Tom Gilliam, Ph.D.

The holidays are here in full (fattening) force. And unfortunately for the health conscious, along with the tinsel and the tree comes the onslaught of temptation: the rich turkey gravy, the dressing, the sugar cookies, the eggnog, the pie—all those comfort foods that taste especially comforting during a recession-marred holiday. But as we mentally prepare ourselves to push away from the festively set table, it’s easy to forget we aren’t the only ones facing tempting treats—our kids are too.

That’s right. Between parties at school and stockings stuffed with sugary surprises, our kids are just as susceptible to the guilty pleasures we allow ourselves during the holiday season. The bad news is that the “special occasion” indulgences we allow during the holidays can quickly morph into harmful bad habits for our children—habits that will last long after the gifts have been unwrapped.

A lifetime of fitness always begins at home, and that’s also true when the home is covered in tinsel and lights. Research shows over and over that the only way to combat childhood obesity is to make nutrition and exercise family priorities. And while it’s okay for them to indulge a little bit during the holidays, you should gently steer your kids away from the third buttery dinner roll and the double handful of chocolate candy.”

It’s no surprise that childhood obesity is a growing problem in the U.S. In fact, the New England Journal of Medicine recently reported that one in three kids is now overweight or obese. This reality has encouraged more and more companies to teach the “family fitness” principle to their employees, helping the “get kids and families healthy together” trend gather momentum.

Nutrition For Your Cells (Part 2) – Getting Toxins Out Of Our Bodies and Nutrition In

Nutrition For your Cells Part 2

(Continued from Nutrition For the Cells – How can we eat right to keep healthy?}

By Warren Tattersall & Susan Smith

Getting Nutrition To Your Cells Involves Three Functions:

1. Cleansing

2. Absorption

3. Cellular Regeneration

1. GETTING NUTRITION TO YOUR CELLS: Cleansing

OUR MODERN DIET AND LIFESTYLES ALLOW A BUILD UP OF TOXINS AND POISONS IN OUR SYSTEM, THAT STRESS OUR WHOLE BODY, PARTICULARLY OUR VITAL ORGANS AND OUR GLANDULAR SYSTEMS.

Many of us live on diets of highly processed foods and we eat at irregular times or at least have our heaviest meals at the wrong time of the day. We have foods that are low in fibre and high in sugars and fats.

This means that the food we do eat takes much longer than it should to pass through our bowel and it putrefies and creates toxic stress on our organs.

The stress on our livers of breaking down high levels of animal products, meats and fats, as well as the drugs and poisons often associated with animal meats, causes problems.

Often people’s livers are swollen and strained from the load we put them under.

The constant demand for digestive enzymes, due to the lack of enzymes contained within the food we eat, can cause the pancreas to swell to an abnormal size.

The villi and micro-villi in the small intestine draw nutrients from the foods we eat and pass them through the walls of the small intestine, into our blood stream and lymph system for delivery to our cells. They become compromised by being brittle and break off.
